Faculty of Medicine is established following a presidential decree in 1975. The first patch was taken in 1978 and the first patch graduation was in 1984. The mission of the FMUG stated clearly that the FMUG has to participate in the development of an innovative health profession education and practice, scientific research and community health services at an individual and social level. The faculty aims to promote an interdisciplinary approach towards health and wellbeing to provide solutions to health related needs, particularly those addressing the priority community problems and the high risk population, through sharing its experience in education, scientific research and health polices with local, regional and international bodies. The educational philosophy of the university rests on community orientation and rural development, teaching and research activities. The faculty is mainly tailored to solve problems of rural areas and rural communityusing an integrated comprehensive approach.Thebroad competencies (knowledge, skills and attitudes) required of students at graduation are considered basic. The knowledge means the basic knowledge in: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Clinical Sciences (history, examination, investigations and management), Community Medicine and Behavioral Sciences. The skills requiresbasic laboratory skills, clinical skills, community diagnoses skills and research skills. Whereas attitudes are the communication skills, respect of patients culture and values, demonstrating sympathy and concern about patients problem, conforming to the code of medical ethics. Involvement of the community in identifying community needswhether defined by risk or by geography, and by ensuring that a graduate physicians who haveobligations to meet societal needs and understand their role in society, thesetting priorities, establishing and evaluating new models of practice is seen as critical. The role of the FMUG and its partner organizations in education, research and service is articulated within the Community programs and social accountability framework Therefore, through its educational, scientific and community involvements, the FMUG will be intimately connected with the health systems at all levels. The FMUG through its steering committee on social accountability adapted the concept of social accountability, which has been publicized by the World Health Organization over the past decade. The expectation is that governments and professions work collaboratively to ensure the highly valued health care system and to provide the necessary access and quality to meet the needs of the population. The graduate will therefore be weaponed to maintain and to improve health services. They will be able to develop the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes so as to solve these health problems. The faculty will also continue to support specialization and continuous education and training of its graduates and staff. Considering the role of the government and other agencies in providing funding for health care services and for research and education, FMUG can play a leadership role in helping to contribute, in partnership with a wide variety of other parties and agencies, in the following areas: (1) The development of a clear and shared clearly articulated and constantly revised vision of the health care system. The optimal preparation of future practitioners to respond to population needs (2) The establishment and promotion of innovative practice patterns to better meet individual and community needs (3) Advocacy for the services and resources needed for optimal patient care (4) The definition and clarification of the concept of social accountability (5)Thedissemination of methods for measuring responsiveness to societal needs (5) There enforcement of partnerships with other stakeholders, including academic health centers, governments, communities and other relevant professional and non-professional organizations.
