On joining the Faculty of Medicine the student would have been taught general biology in the secondary school including zoology-especially vertebrata and Invertebrata The present course aims to provide the student with general information and knowledge regarding parasites and medically important insects; especially classification of both. This will be a base for more detailed information which the student will meet in some future courses-such as system courses and endemic disease common parasites and disease transmitting insects cause a lot of common and important diseases in Sudan – Such as malaria, Bilharzia, leishmaniasis and sleeping sickness as well as worms.
1 Use and maintenance of the light microscope
2 Medically important parasites & Arthropods
3 General properties & classification of animal parasites of man & Arthropod vectors of
4 Ecology , life cycle & important structure of medically important parasites
(Protozoa - Helminths ) & Arthropods and describe the differential characteristics of them
5 Classification of Entomology and the main groups of (insects) which transmit diseases and those that cause diseases in humans and its mode of transmission (Mechanical, biological, etc..)
1) General Objectives:
The student will be provided by general information regarding parasite
especially those causing common disease in Sudan as important insects as their role in disease
2) Specific Objectives:
By the end of this course the student must be able to:
1 Use the microscope properly
2 Identify medically important parasites & Arthropods
3 Describe general properties & classification of animal parasites of man & Arthropod vectors of human disease
4 Discuss the ecology , life cycle & important structure of medically important parasites (Protozoa - Helminths ) & Arthropods and describe the differential characteristics of them
5 Discuss the classification of Entomology and the main groups of (insects) which transmit the diseases and those which cause diseases to humans and its mode of
transmission (Mechanical, biological, etc..)
