المقدمة


Blood is one of the most important components of the body, being the vehicle for carrying oxygen and nutrients to the body cells, and removing the by-products of the metabolic activities of the cells, thereby preventing their accumulation in the systems.
Certain of its cellular and humoral elements are vital parts in the body defence system.
Certain aberrations in either cellular or fluid components or in both can give rise to major health problems.
One of the most common disease, not only in the developing countries, but worldwide (Nutritional Anaemias) is a blood disease which is not only curable but in the majority of cases preventable.
Inherited genetic defects of blood elements (formation & function i.e. haemophilia & thelassaemia, though numerically less important health problems, can be most tragic in human terms and certainly of wide social and moral implications.
Furthermore, many system and organ specific disease (liver diseases, Renal diseases, Gastro-intestinal diseases, Collagen diseases and skin diseases) have complications that can affect adversely blood formation and constitution. Awareness of this will be of immense value in the diagnosis and management of these diseases.
Perhaps one of the commonest procedures in medical practice is the transfusion of blood and blood products. This should make blood one of the most familiar tissues of the body both to the clinician and public.
Many infectious diseases (e.g. Malaria, Filaria and relapsing fever) are also blood-borne, and frequent examination of the blood to diagnose them, is important.

6 Blood volume, methods of its measurement and be familiar with the use of Blood products
7 The structure of the haemoglobin molecule, the differences between the three types of normal haemoglobin A, A2 & F (adult A2, Hb A2 and foetal HB)
8 The socio-economic factors related to nutritional deficiency anaemia.
9 Management of the different types of anaemias (Nutritional, haemolytic and heruditary enzme deficiences + aplastic anaemia)
10 Managenment of the different types of leukaemias (Myeloid, lymphatic both acute and chronic)
11 The major haemoglobinopathies, their aetiology, epidemiology and outline their management e.g. Sickle cell anaemia, Thalassaemia major and minor etc.
12 Theory of blood coagulation, the role, of the vessels, coagulation factors and platelets haemostasis. Describe the most important bleeding diathesis, their aetiology and management
13 Bleeding and coagulation times
14 An ABO and Rhesus blood grouping using RBCs and antisera and perform a simple cross matching and discuss the inheritance of major blood groups
15 Parental problems using blood grouping
16 The role of blood bank and procedures, methods of donors selection and problems of blood transfusion e.g. hepatitis B and AIDS
17 The basic structure of the lymphocytes in the body defence mechanisms
18 Discus classification and pathology of lymphoma (Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s)
19 Pathology, complications and management of multiple myeloma
20 Cellular and humeral immunity, the general mechanism of antibody production and the basic structure and types of the immunoglobulins and complement.

1) General Objective:

The course is designed to provide the student with a sound basic knowledge and relevant skills of the blood and its related problems.

2) Specific Objectives:

By the end of the course the student should be able to:
2.1 Describe the basic principles of the blood formation, its intra and extra-uterine life sites of formation and the factors influencing blood formation i.e. iron, vitamins B12, folic acid, hormones (erythropoietin)
2.2 Discuss iron metabolism
2.3 Recognize under the microscope or on the screen the normal cellular elements of the blood i.e. RBC, WBC & platelets.
2.4 Discuss the basic facts about the RBC, its life span, its metabolism, measurements of its different parameters and the significance of its indices
2.5 Do simple estimation of Hb by the Sahli method. Do WBC and RBC count, (calculate the red cell indices and interpret their significance.
2.6 Have basic knowledge of blood volume, methods of its measurement and be familiar with the use of blood products
2.7 Describe the structure of the haemoglobin molecule, the differences between the three types of normal haemoglobin A, A2 & F (adult A2, Hb A2 and foetal HB)
